Team USA 3×3 is now 0-3 after loss to Australia 🇦🇺

After Team USA’s devastating loss to Australia they are now 0-3 placing them in the bottom of the rankings. In the pool play game Australia came out on top with a 17-15 win over the defending champions. The champs aren’t looking very good in the Paris Olympics after taking several losses.

Team USA tied the game at 12 with just 2 minutes remaining on the clock. Australia seized the next possession to score three back to back points. Rhyne Howard put an end to the 3-0 run with a two point shot. Derica Hamby had a vital block late in the game that stopped the Australian’s. However, the American women just couldn’t seem to find an answer when it came to defending Australia.

In the final seconds of the game the score was 16-14, until an assist from Howard to Hamby led to a key bucket. The American’s intentionally had to foul Australia to get the ball back but it was far too late to change the outcome as the clock’s time ran out.

Atlanta Dream’s Rhyne Howard showcased her wide range shooting in Thursday’s game. Howard had 8 points on six deep shots, battling to keep Team USA in close range of Australia. The Spark’s Hamby had four points and six rebounds that helped Team USA stay in the game.

Australia’s Alex Wilson finished the game with 8 points leading them to victory. The Aussies put up a great game with only six turnovers compared to the Americans 14.  Australians move onto 3-1 after taking down the Americans.

A missed layup by TCU’s Hailey Van Lith could have tied the game up back when the score was 11-10. After the game Hamby also complained about the refs and their unfairness. Team USA struggled to find their chemistry as a whole in Thursday’s game. Regardless of the calls the Americans couldn’t stop Australia’s fast paced three-women weaves.

“Everybody’s got the same refs,” Cierra Burdick said. “I don’t worry about things that are out of my control. Some people get good calls, some people get bad calls, that’s basketball.”

Earlier this week the Americans took two losses to Germany and Azerbaijan. The loss on Thursday drops Team USA to 0-3.

Only two more games left to go for the Americans to get their first win in the Paris Olympics before the eliminations begin. On Thursday, Team USA is in for a rough one as they play the tournament leaders, Spain.

“I think the effort was a little bit better,” Burdick said. “But we got to find another gear to tap into. Because we’re not getting it done.”

Tensions are rising as many fans are questioning whether the right team was chosen to compete at the Olympics. The Americans will need to dig up something in their bag to move out of the eighth seed.
