STORRS – UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma becomes only the third Division I coach to surpass 1,200 wins, joining former Duke men’s coach Mike Kryzyzewksi (1,202) and Stanford women’s coach Tara VanDerveer (1,206).Auriemma has dominated Big East conference play while at UConn, winning 21 straight games against Big East opponents, with his most recent loss coming to Marquette in February 2023.
“I could probably say, with a great deal of certainty, that I’ll never be No. 1 in wins, I don’t think that will happen,” he said. “And I’m still going to enjoy my wine and I’m going to sleep good tonight.”
Auriemma transformed UConn from a program with only one winning season before his arrival in 1985 into a consistent title contender. In addition to their 11 titles, the Huskies have advanced to 22 Final Fours and had six perfect seasons. Since 1992-93, none of Auriemma’s teams have won fewer than 25 games in a season.
