Mississippi – Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin is Ole Miss Women’s Basketball’s head coach who has led the Lady Rebels to a successful season coming in 3rd place in the SEC. This week and weekend the Lady Rebels will battle it out in the SEC tournament with South Carolina, LSU, Tennessee, and several other challenging teams hoping to win the championship in one of the toughest conferences in the nation.
Earlier this season, Coach Yo sat down with us to discuss her thoughts on this historic season for women’s basketball and the future of the Lady Rebel’s program. She shed light on who she thinks has done a great job this season on and off the court.
As conferences announce their awards for Player of The Year, Coach of The Year, and more, Coach Yo shined a light on who she thinks should win these exciting awards.
“Coach of The Year has to go to Dawn Staley,” explained Coach Yo. Coach Staley most recently finished with a perfect season, leading the South Carolina Gamecocks to a 29-0 season with perfect conference play. Coach Staley was also named SEC Coach of the Year and was congratulated on the achievement by Vice President Kamala Harris.
“She’s lost 7 players and she’s still kicking everybody’s butt,” said Coach Yo. “She’s just built a dynasty there.”
When asked who should get National Player of the Year, Coach Yo chuckled and said, “If I am being biased, I’m going to look at Angel Reese in the SEC. If I am not being biased, then it’s Caitlin Clark. Caitlin Clark putting up the numbers.”
Caitlin Clark was just announced to be the Big 10 player of the year for the third year in a row, a distinction that has not been held by any Iowa women’s basketball player thus far.
As we wrap up the rest of the season, we have a strong inkling that Coach Yo’s predictions will come true. This article and clip is an excerpt of our full interview with Coach Yo that will be released tomorrow as the team progresses into SEC tournament play.
